Sen. Bernie Sanders (I., Vt.) is "considering another run for the presidency," his 2016 campaign manager said Tuesday.
During an interview on C-SPAN's "Washington Journal," Jeff Weaver was asked whether voters would get another shot to choose Sanders in 2020.
"Voters in Vermont certainly will coming up in November," Weaver said. "Nationally, you know, he is considering another run for the presidency. When the time comes I think we’ll have an answer to that, but right now, he’s still considering it."
Sanders mounted a strong challenge to Hillary Clinton for the 2016 Democratic nomination, winning 22 primaries and caucuses against the well-funded frontrunner. His influence is apparent in the recent embrace of a single-payer "Medicare for all" health insurance program by numerous top Democrats, which Sanders has long espoused.
He told MSNBC's Al Sharpton last month he hadn't made up his mind about a White House bid yet. He said he would support whoever had the best chance of defeating President Donald Trump.
"I want more than anything to see that Trump is defeated, and what I will assess at the proper time is who is the best candidate, and I mean that sincerely," Sanders said. "Everybody has an ego. I have an ego. But what is most important for this country is that we come together, to transform America … and to defeat Donald Trump."
Sanders is expected to cruise to re-election to his Vermont Senate seat this November. He won easily in his two prior Senate elections in 2006 and 2012.
