Illinois Man Wards Off Attacker With AR-15

By Firearm Daily Staff

In Oswego Township Illinois, a homeowner used his AR-15 rifle to stop a potentially deadly knife attack.

According to police, a neighbor witnessed a person with a knife attack a victim in an apartment complex. The neighbor, Dave Thomas, who had a valid concealed carry and firearm owner’s ID card, grabbed his AR-15 after hearing the commotion and seeing a lot of blood in the hallway of an apartment building.

Thomas, who teaches concealed carry classes, says that he believes that the attacker stopped the attack because of the AR-15. Otherwise, he might have continued stabbing the victim until he was dead. The attacker, Jacob Currey, has a long police record, including aggravated battery on a pregnant woman. If Currey hadn’t been stopped during this most recent attack on an innocent victim, who knows what would have happened.

This incident just goes to show that in the hands of the right person, an AR-15 can be used for good purposes rather than evil. Unfortunately, most of the media tends to focus on demonizing the AR-15 rather than showing the public how it can be used as a self-defense tool. And, in this case, the law-abiding gun owner did not even need to fire a single shot to provide protection for another human being. Just showing the criminal that he possessed the dangerous-looking AR-15 was enough to stop the felon in his tracks.

The AR-15, introduced during the Vietnam War and then later banned in 1994, has become the most controversial civilian weapon in the modern age.

In February, 19-year-old Nikolas Cruz used an Ar-15 to gun down 17 people at the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland. This was one of the deadliest mass shootings in the history of the United States. An AR-15 was also used in the Las Vegas mass shooting, where a gunman killed 58 people and left hundreds more injured.

The iconic weapon has been linked to a slew of other mass killings too. After the most recent tragedy in Florida, opponents to gun rights have once again renewed their assault on the AR-15. Proponents of gun control claim that the AR-15 has no place on the civilian market. However, that is simply not true.

Gun control proponents are ignoring important facts, including statistics that show that, aside from mass shootings, the demonized rifle is responsible for just a tiny portion of the gun violence in the U.S. Also, the vast majority of owners never use their AR-15 to commit a crime. In fact, the AR-15 is much more likely to be used to provide protection than to commit a crime.
