Mitch “the Blocker” McConnell

By Jean Tierney

‘Repeal and Replace Obamacare’ never stood a chance of getting past Mitch "The Blocker" McConnell and is probably  doomed this fall in spite of any further praiseworthy Trumpian efforts to help America's middle class escape a law which destroys our health and drains our bank accounts. After all, the Senate Majority Leader has some very close ties to special interest healthcare dollars. Add to that the fact that his wife, new US Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao McConnell, “…received $50,000 in 2015 for a five-minute speech to the political wing of the Mujahedeen-e-Khalq, previously called a cult-like terrorist group" by the US State Department. Why gum up a pleasant and lucrative life style just to do the right thing!

Though it completely escaped media attention, a one minute internet search turned up a report from showing details about the cozy relationship between McConnell and David A. Jones, Sr, the founder of healthcare giant, Humana. According to the report, “…Jones and the charitable foundations he and his family control had donated $1.6 million to the McConnell Center at the University of Louisville, which both men attended." And the generosity works both ways. For when Jones and his associates asked for help in raising $10 million for a Louisville, KY parks project, Mitchie the Blocker nee Kentucky ‘rainmaker’ suddenly opened up a whopping $38 million federal funds giveaway!

And the love-fest was far from over as in 2009, “…an emotional Jones-who retired from Humana four years earlier-donated $1 million to help pay for the Mitch McConnell-Elaine Chao Archives at the McConnell Center." This terribly important center is preserving for posterity such McConnell memorabilia as his high school yearbooks, family photos and campaign records, which I doubt we’ll ever get to examine.

The website goes on to reveal that “…Jones and his family along with Humana employees have given more than $193,000 to McConnell and his various fundraising entities over the past three decades, according to FEC records and the Center for Responsive Politics, a campaign watchdog group." Goodness knows how many tax dollars were spent for the purpose of generating this largesse!

Mitch "The Blocker" McConnell's successful blocking of the vital repeal and replace Obamacare law is just the good old boy doing what he knows best how to do.  A report by CampaignMoney.orgties the longtime Republican Majority Leader's efforts at blocking and filibustering needed legislation to the dough his big campaign donors pony up to his coffers. Although it’s being dismissed as a "shameless hack job (that) could be proven false in less than ten minutes by an intern with an iPhone,"  examination of this report provides bald evidence of the man's well-honed techniques and the reporter's axiom to "Follow the Money." Titled: "Is Mitch McConnell's Objection to Filibuster Reform Related to Campaign Finance," this shocking report reveals details of other close votes in the Senate that favored McConnell’s own interests!

Consider these results of McConnell’s political efforts: 1) On 3-29-12, the Senate's close vote of 51 to 47 blocked removal of $24 billion in tax breaks and giveaways to five Big Oil conglomerates. This Senatorial blocking maneuver followed by only three days a huge donation to McConnell of $131,500 from Midland, TX big oil donors! 2) A very important attempt to return US money stashed overseas to give jobs back to American workers stateside met a similar fate, but nearly $1 million found its way into McConnell's fundraising agencies. When Senate bill 3816 failed in 2010, large donors including General Electric, Microsoft, Koch Industries and Exxon Mobil contributed big bucks to McConnell’s various accounts.  (3a) Finally, a McConnell protégé, Steven Law, headed up "the largest dark money group, Crossroads GPS (Grassroots Policy Strategies"). The report reveals: "Crossroads was this past year's highest spending dark money group with $70.6 million in disclosed spending." (this past year referred to 2010.)

Want to talk about a Russian Concussion? "During the 2015-2016 election season, Ukrainian-born billionaire Leonid "Len" Blavatnik contributed $6.35 million to leading Republican candidates and incumbent senators.  Mitch McConnell was the top recipient of Blavatnik's donations, collecting $2.5 million for his GOP Senate Leadership Fund under the names of two of Blavatnik's holding companies."  Although Robert Mueller can’t find any evidence of a Trump/Russian conspiracy, it seems Mitchie the Kid had a pretty warm relationship with the super wealthy Blavatnik.

So much for helping out middle class America, Mitch. So what if insurance providers are bailing out of ObamaCare?  So what if high deductibles keep us from using Obamacare?  Who cares about middle class Americans? Here is what web commenter MagginKat said after the article: "I guess that partially explains how his (Mitch McConnell’s) net worth increased from $4 million to $25 million in just 4 years. That scumbag should be in prison. This congress is too corrupt for words."
