“Mankind” is a sexist reference claims female professor
A Student Was Punished by Her Professor for Using 'Mankind' in an Essay — Now She's Speaking Out
The word “mankind” has historically been used as a catch-all phrase to refer all of humanity. But a Northern Arizona University (NAU) professor deemed that very word sexist and decided its use warranted punitive measures.
According to Cailin Jeffers, an English major at NAU, one of her professors deducted a point from a paper she wrote for “using inappropriate gendered language” when she used the word “mankind.”
Jeffers spoke out on Friday evening with an appearance on “Tucker Carlson Tonight.” Explaining her side of the story, Jeffers said:
“I turned in a paper, I had used the word 'mankind' and apparently that wasn't to her liking. Apparently that's sexist and not gender neutral language, and I should be punished for that.”
Seemingly befuddled by the situation, host Tucker Carlson questioned Jeffers about the story. “What I find so striking is that she's an English teacher so of course language is her subject of study, and accuracy has got to be a concern for anyone who's teaching kids. Did she say it wasn't accurate?” asked Carlson.
Jeffers explained that her professor claimed that the word “mankind” only refers to men, referring to the Modern Language Association (MLA) as evidence of her claim.
“She told me using the word 'mankind' was sexist and against women, apparently it has a history of holding women down in some fashion,” explained Jeffers.
In a note added to the essay in question, the professor wrote:
“I would be negligent...if I did not also raise this issue of gendered language and ask my students to respect the need for gender-neutral language.”
Questioning the professor's view of sexism, Carlson proposed a hypothetical:
“If you had a student in your class wearing a burqa, who was told she could not reveal her hair in the presence of men, do you think Professor Scott would consider that sexist?”
“She wouldn't say anything about it,” answered Jeffers.
How many remember the joke about liberals who demanded that Manhole covers be replaced by Personhole covers? Apparently we've arrived. Ed.
